Oglala Sioux Tribe President Frank Star Comes Out has brought together leaders from more than 19 tribes to plan the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Greasy Grass, set for June 25–26, 2026, at Crow Agency, Montana.

The planning effort includes dedicated committees for genealogy verification, logistics and security, youth education, history and public relations, and fiscal sponsorship. The Great Plains Tribal Chairmen's Association is serving as the fiscal sponsor for the commemoration.

"This is not a government ceremony," Star Comes Out has emphasized. "This is a tribal-led movement to ensure the sesquicentennial is told through Indigenous voices." The commemoration will feature cultural programming, educational events, and a gathering that organizers expect will draw thousands of Indigenous people from across the continent.

The 150th stands in deliberate contrast to the 1976 centennial, which was largely a government-run affair focused on the "Custer's Last Stand" narrative. The 2026 event centers Indigenous victory and resilience.
